ReadPlease 2003 is a free piece of software that reads text aloud using Microsoft's Sam, Mike and Mary synthesized voices.
It allows users with reading difficulties such as dyslexia to have their work proof-read, emails read aloud and so on. Users with visual difficulties may find they benefit from transferring some of work usually carried out visually over to their auditory modality. Most usefully if left running in the background, ReadPlease can start reading immediately when the clipboard is filled with text, e.g. after pressing:
CTRL + C.
The ReadPlease Plus version ($50) can highlight words while speaking and supports AT&T's Natural Voices. They have a useful comparison table for these two products.
